What’s Fresh?
This week Squirrel is going nuts over (drumroll, please) red scallions and pointed cabbage from Post Apples CSA, cauliflower from Weavers, new Northern Scoop: pints of Pina Colada sorbet (dairy-free), Salted Carmel Butterfinger & the “My Soul Mate” sammie and fresh blueberries fromRaintree Farms. Check out the Recipe Corner to learn how to harness the power of blueberries and herbs!
Recipe Corner: from failure to Foccacia!
Sometimes, a recipe just doesn’t pan out: you forget a key ingredient, add too much spice, burn it to a crisp, or the yeast doesn’t activate. In the case of this week’s recipe inspiration, it was dead yeast. Although the original intention was to make conchas, a delicious Mexican sweet bread, we were able to salvage the dough and turn it into a beautiful dessert focaccia-style bread with a blueberry lemon jelly topping, fresh hyssop, Thai basil, edible flowers, and a drizzle of honey.
Focacciais a type of bread that is covered in olive oil, herbs, and veggies, typically arranged in an eye-catching design. For your own bread, we suggest using Post Apples Red Scallions, Live & Learn Farms edible flowers, basil, summer savory, rosemary, thyme, Rick Walker Farms cherry tomatoes or Wayward Seed organic fennel.
July Producer Meet & Greet with Ains Pots!
Last Saturday, July 15th, we got a chance to chat with Ainsley Kissel of Ains Pots, one of our Market Monthly Partners for July. Kissel is a fourth-year student at PennWest Edinboro with a dual major in Art Education and Ceramics, and is very excited to keep creating and start teaching.
Kissel’s work is inspired by found objects, how people may interact with his pieces and by the feeling of spaces. “If I can explore, that [space] feels more comfy to me,” explained Kissel. When asked what comfort means to him, he said “Give and take in a space, being able to play. Smells. Sunshine. Earth Tones.” His miniature incense diffusing huts embody all of these ideas in one unique, functional piece. These are some of his favorite items to make, along with “pools” created from repurposed sinks for his other venture of hand-crafted finger skateboards. In his free time, Kissel is passionate about making teas and finding discarded, odd objects on the ground while riding his (full-sized) skateboard.
Although Kissel is really looking forward to teaching and following in the footsteps of his family of educators, he plans to continue selling his wares in local shops and expand his offerings in the future. He is always interested in making pieces that invite interaction, so if you have any ideas, reach out! Thank you to Ainsley and anyone who stopped to chat and check out his work. It’s only here through the end of July, so cozy up with your favorite piece before its too late!
