What’s Fresh? This week Squirrel is going nuts about…artichokes and cauliflower,
(and nectarines and pears and plums and Date Night cheesecake!!)
The artichokes and cauliflower are from Post Apple CSA. The fruit is from Orton Fruit Farm and the cheesecake is made in-house by Curtis of the Boro Sweet Spot! See 17 tasty artichoke recipes at the bottom of this newsletter.
Food for Thought
Making our own headlines…Curtis shared this Instagram post with me last week. I totally agree with the idea that we choose what news, current events, and information we consume. There are MANY people doing inspiring, positive things in our community. In that vein, read through this great post and then read the follow up story about folks in our area making the headlines that we choose to read. 🙂
Stephanie Thauer at the ‘Pay What You Can’ farmer’s market on Parade Street.
In the spirit of ‘making our own headlines,’ we’re sharing an inspiring story featuring two farmers who sell through the Edinboro Market! Since July, Stephanie Ciner, of Wild Field Urban Farm, and Stephanie Thauer of the Conscious Food Project and Raintree Farms, have partnered on a weekly ‘pay what you can’ farm stand that brings locally grown produce to residents of Erie’s Parade Street neighborhood, a low access food area.
They sell items they have grown themselves or that have been donated by neighbors or local farms including Fat Hawk Farm, Live and Learn Farms, Octagon Acres, Plot Twist Farm, Post Apple CSA, Strawberry Lane Produce, and Vanco Family Farm.
This alternate economic model, with growers and individuals donating produce, and some customers paying more than the asking price so others can pay what they can afford, allows EVERYONE to access the abundance of the summer produce season in northwest PA. Look for them at 15th and Parade in Erie, PA, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays through the end of September.
